Context And Mission
The Computational Biology Group (http://life.bsc.es/compbio), within the Life Sciences Department at the BSC, is involved in multiple projects covering several areas of precision medicine, systems biology, network science, and epidemiology.
The Computational Biology group, led by ICREA professor Alfonso Valencia, is looking for a research engineer to work in the framework of a project of the Knowledge Generation Projects call for proposals: Health trajectories and the role of sex, gender, aging, and treatments in comorbidities. This project is divided into two main sections. The first focuses on analysing Electronic Health Records from different populations, combining disease diagnoses with drug prescription and administration information. Its main objective is to generate health trajectories, which will allow evaluation of the impact of the co-occurrence of chronic diseases and the co-administration of drugs on the risk of developing secondary diseases. Given that as we age, the risk of multimorbidities (and the consequent co-administration of drugs) increases, this is a fundamental point since it has been described, but not systematically analysed, that the co-occurrence of diseases increases the risk of developing new diseases, putting at greater risk the lives of adults in particular. The second section focuses on providing biological hypotheses to disease co-occurrences using molecular data. More specifically, biological alterations that promote differences in comorbidity relationships between sexes will be analysed. In addition, information on disease-associated mutations will be combined with expression data from different tissues to study, from a molecular point of view, the impact of aging on the risk of developing secondary diseases.
The selected candidate will work in a highly sophisticated High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment, have access to state-of-the-art systems and computational infrastructures, and establish collaborations with international and local experts in different areas of biomedical research.
Key Duties
- Study disease co-occurrence using hypergraphs.
- Analyze omics data to study the role of aging on the development of diseases and comorbidities.
- Write scientific articles and participate in dissemination activities
- Supervise junior profiles in the group
- Education
- BSc in biology, biotechnology, medicine, or a related field
- MSc in bioinformatics or a related field
- Or higher vocational education (FPII)
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Previous experience in omics data analysis, network analysis, and basic knowledge of epidemiology.
- Programming: R and Python.
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Knowledge and experience in life sciences research.
- Knowledge and some experience in statistics.
- Knowledge and some experience in AI methodologies.
