What will you be doing in this role?
As a Unified Communications Engineer you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and management of both analogue and digital communication systems, ensuring seamless collaboration and connectivity across the organization. This role requires expertise in telephony, VoIP, video conferencing, messaging platforms, and legacy analogue systems, with a strong focus on maintaining performance, security, and reliability.
Main Responsibilities In This Role Include
- Design, configure, and deploy UC solutions, including IP telephony, video conferencing, messaging systems, and analog communication technologies.
- Upgrade legacy analog systems to integrate with digital and IP-based platforms while ensuring minimal disruption.
- Evaluate and implement scalable UC architectures that support business growth.
- Administer and maintain UC platforms such as Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or similar tools.
- Monitor system performance and perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal uptime and reliability.
- Ensure seamless integration of analog and digital communication systems with enterprise IT infrastructure.
- Collaborate with networking teams to optimize QoS (Quality of Service) and bandwidth utilization for UC traffic.
- Work with third-party vendors to ensure compatibility and smooth operation of hybrid communication systems.
- Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for all UC-related issues, providing level 3 support to resolve complex problems.
- Maintain logs and documentation for incidents, resolutions, and system changes.
- Implement security best practices to protect voice, video, and messaging systems from unauthorized access and breaches.
- Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers or administrators on UC tools and practices.
- Migrate or phase out legacy systems by implementing modern, cost-effective solutions.
Key skills and experience:
- Proven experience in Unified Communications or a related field.
- Detailed hands-on experience with analog systems (e.g., PBX, SIP gateways)
- Detailed hands-on experience with modern UC platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Cisco WebEx).
- Strong knowledge of VoIP protocols (SIP, RTP, H.323) and telephony systems.
- Proficiency in managing PBX systems, SIP trunks, and analog-to-digital migrations.
- Familiarity with network troubleshooting tools for UC traffic, such as Wireshark or SolarWinds.
- Cisco Certified Network Associate Collaboration (CCNA Collaboration) or equivalent.
- Experience in cloud-based UC solutions like Zoom Phone, RingCentral, or Cisco Webex Calling.
- Scripting or automation experience for UC tasks (e.g., PowerShell, Python).
- Understanding of ITIL frameworks and best practices in incident management
- Knowledge of legacy infrastructure, including paging systems and analog signal processing.
